Hela Wedakama, Sri Lanka's ancient medicine

Sri Lanka prides itself on having a long history of medicine. It is even said that the world's first hospitals were established here. Remnants of this are visible in the ruins of the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Medirigiriya and Mihintale.

A bit of history

Based on Ayurveda, traditional Sri Lankan medicine is called Hela Wedakama. It has many branches according to pathology in question, such as the treatment of fractured bones (Kedumbidum Wedakama), snake bites (Sarpavisha Wedakama), and psychiatry (Unmada Wedakama).

The first known Ayurvedic text is the "Sarartha Sangrahaya", which was  written by Buddhadasa (4th century), a king and a scholar. It is still used today as a reference by contemporary physicians. Over the centuries, knowledge has been handed down, and remedies and treatments have been improved. Today, traditional medicine still plays an important role in Sri Lanka and the the government has even established an Ayurvedic Medical Council.

Made to measure

Traditional medicine is based on the main principles of Ayurveda. Both preventive and curative, it is based on the principle that a balance must be achieved between the five elements (Pancha Maha Bhuta): air, fire, water, earth and ethereal substance (or space). It is estimated that its origin dates back more than 2,000 years.

Each individual is treated according to his or her personal structure, which is determined by the doshas, the vital energies: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. After determining the patient's individual make-up, the Ayurvedic doctor is able to issue a set of prescriptions that concern all areas of daily life, including diet and yoga postures to be practised. The doctor might also prescribe personalised oil and herbal treatments, and traditional therapeutic massages adapted to the needs of each individual.

The art of wellness

Traditional Sri Lankan medicine is holistic and focuses on treating the whole body and mind in a comprehensive manner. The result is a general feeling of well-being and a renewed sense of balance. Oil massages also provide intense relaxation, as do herbal steam baths. You can also recharge your batteries by practising meditation or yoga surrounded by Sri Lanka's beautiful landscape, such as on a beach at sunrise or in the heart of the forest. After having experienced these ancient healing methods, there is no doubt that you will leave feeling completely rejuvenated. This is especially the case if you have chosen to do an Ayurvedic treatment lasting several weeks.
