Mirissa, a must-see
Mirissa is one of the most famous beaches on the island. It owes its fame mainly to its setting. A thin strip of white sand, bordered by coconut palms on one side and turquoise water on the other. Under the canopy, hidden in the shade of the palm trees, you’ll find plenty of little bars. You can watch the waves gently lap at the shore as you sip a fresh fruit juice. But lazing around, pleasant as it is, isn’t the only activity to be enjoyed here. Mirissa beach is the perfect place to learn to surf. Beginners and experts take to the waves formed by the reef break. It is also a great starting point for a boat trip to try and spot one of the Earth’s most majestic creatures: whales. Every year they stop over in the south of Sri Lanka for a few weeks. This is a site not to be missed. 

Nilaveli and Uppuveli: a dynamic duo

Only a few minutes away from each other, these two beaches compete for visitors. Who has the clearest water, Nilaveli or Uppuveli? The answer is up for debate. What is certain is that both will delight snorkelers. In the turquoise water, turtles and black tip sharks put on a show. Although these fish can seem intimidating, they are completely harmless. In this protected bay, the whole family can enjoy swimming in complete safety. And if the urge to see more watery wonders arises, you can head to Pigeon Island. Located just opposite Nilaveli, its reefs are a delight for all underwater explorers.

Surfing in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is the perfect balance of lively and quiet and is a beach that will appeal to all travellers. Its powerful swell and many surf schools offer the best conditions to take on the waves. This has become one of the most famous spots on the island, thanks in particular to the many sports competitions organised there. From the beach, the ballet of surfers is an impressive sight for those who prefer the deckchair to the board. A gentle walk along the bay leads to Elephant Rock. From the top of this rock, facing the sea, the view of the sunset is breath-taking. One thing’s for sure: with panoramas like this, it’ll be hard to say goodbye. 

The relaxing Bentota

This huge beach stretches as far as the eye can see. Boasting golden sands and crystal-clear water, only a handful of lucky visitors frequent this spot. Despite its beauty, Bentota is still relatively quiet. In this calm ocean setting, the first activity on the agenda is to kick back and relax. This moment of pure R&R can easily be prolonged by a visit to one of the spas along the shore. Here, you will be able to enjoy massages and Ayurvedic treatments and treat yourself to a well-deserved break. Underwater, you’ll find yourself in total silence, with an unbeatable view. Going for a dive at the place known as Canoe Rock will give you access to an impressive coral reef. There is also a small cave where lobsters hide between the rocks.

Tangalle and its creeks

This small fishing port marks the boundary between the vast expanse of the south-east and the peaceful coves of the south. Tangalle is somewhat of a hidden gem, but it has all the makings of a postcard setting. The vegetation is wild, the sand slightly pink and peacocks roam freely on the beach. It gives you the feeling of being at the end of the world, the perfect spot for a very soothing stay. The coves surrounding the Goyambokka area are the classic image of a tropical paradise. Here visitors can be lulled by the gentle sound of the waves and enjoy the sunshine in peace. At Marakolliya and Rekawa Beach, the turtles leave their eggshells as a souvenir, if you're lucky enough to find one. It’s like a 100% natural treasure hunt.

Underwater beauty in Hikkaduwa

The reason why there are so many diving schools here is that the waters of Hikkaduwa are a real treasure trove. Just offshore you’ll find the "coral garden", a coral reef home to many tropical fish. With just a mask and snorkel, it is easy to explore this shimmering underwater garden. You may even come across some giant turtles, gracefully meandering their way through the ocean waters. It’s the perfect encounter to tell your friends or family about, while lounging peacefully on the fine sand. Then, head to one of the many beach bars to finish your day with a refreshing cocktail - view included. Those who haven’t tired themselves out can make the day last until the early hours. After all, there is no shortage of parties in Hikkaduwa.
